Imagine pulling a helmet over your head and being able to experience a virtual world that seems totally real to the senses. You can create, fly, race and run around in a way unlike ever before. What once only seemed possible in Hollywood fantasy is now a reality with Oculus Rift, a virtual reality head-mounted display developed, manufactured and released by Oculus VR.
Invented by a devoted VR enthusiast, Palmer Luckey – co-founder of Oculus CR – the Oculus Rift is a smart, well-crafted virtual reality system that will work with your gaming laptop or desktop.
After Luckey debuted a prototype of Oculus Rift at the Electronic Entertainment Expo – also known as E3 – in 2012, he founded Oculus VR in Irvine, California with Brendan Iribe, who took up the role of CEO.
The duo initiated a Kickstarter project in August 2012 two months after being founded as an independent company, to fund the development of prototypes and successfully raised a whopping $2.4 million. After a promising launch, Luckey along with his crew started work on refining the HMD and released a number of prototypes, including Crescent Bay, Development Kit 2 (DK2) and Crystal Dove.
Just picture yourself wearing a set of snowboard goggles. However, instead of seeing miles of snow you are transported underwater or into space. The Oculus Rift accomplishes this with a pair of screens displaying two images simultaneously, one for each eye. Placed on top of the panels, a set of lenses focus and reshape the picture to create a stereoscopic 3D image for each eye.
The virtual reality goggles feature embedded sensors which monitors the head motions of the wearer and adjusts the image accordingly. The Oculus Rift’s latest version also comes with an external positional-tracking sensor that tracks head movements with precision and accuracy. The end result? The sensation of being inside a 3D world.
